Bar Code Types:
In order to best fit different types of applications, GS1 System provides several types of bar codes for use by GS1 members since bar code types have different strengths and weaknesses.

The bar codes used by GS1 fall into six types as follows:
EAN/UPC, RSS, GS1-128, ITF-14, Data Matrix, and Composite Component.

1-   EAN/UPC
It is used for retail Point-of-Sale and in logistics due to its high volume scanning environment

2-RSS
The RSS is a group of symbols that are smaller than EAN/UPC and can be also used for retail Point-of-Sale, but this idea is being considered by the Gs1 Board Task force for future adoption. They are used on health care items that do not cross the Point-of-Sale (POS).

3- Gs1 -128 (UCC/EAN 128)
They can carry all GS1 keys and attributes, but they can never be used to identify items crossing the Point-of-Sale.

4-ITF -14
ITF-14 can only carry GTINs and can be printed on cartons which may have ridges and grooves, but they can not be used to identify items that cross the Point-of-Sale.

5-Data Matrix
It is a two-dimension bar code, which is currently specified for healthcare items, not crossing the Point-of-Sale and direct part marking.

6-Composite Component
A two-dimension linear symbol employed with a linear bar code, like GS1 128 and RSS.
